The Wiener Christkindlmarkt at Rathausplatz, Vienna’s main Christmas market, runs November 13 to December 26, 2026, daily from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., in front of City Hall in the 1st district. It was our absolute favorite of the six cities’ markets we visited on our London-to-Prague train trip in late 2025: London, Stuttgart, Munich, Salzburg, Vienna and Prague.

The Wiener Christkindlmarkt at Rathausplatz

Vienna’s biggest market fills the square in front of the City Hall (Rathaus), a huge Gothic building that’s lit up at night. Walk under the glowing Wiener Christkindlmarkt sign, and you’re surrounded by stalls, a giant Christmas tree, and trees in the park wrapped in lights.

There’s a Ferris wheel in the park beside the market, too, a fun way to see it all from above.

Glühwein and the mug tradition

The glühwein (hot mulled wine) was wonderful at every market we visited, and Vienna’s was no exception. It’s served in a ceramic souvenir mug with a small deposit. Bring the mug back to get your deposit, or keep it as a souvenir. We collected mugs from every market, and each city’s design is different. Most markets also serve kinderpunsch (non-alcoholic punch) for kids.

Tips for Vienna’s Christmas markets

  • Go after dark. The lights are the whole point. Late afternoon into evening is magical.
  • Expect crowds on weekends. Weeknights are calmer.
  • Bring cash and a bag for your mugs. Many stalls take cards, but not all.
  • Dress warmly. You’ll be standing outside for hours, and it’s often cold and damp.
  • With little kids, a wagon or sturdy stroller helps. Chantelle’s niece and nephew rode (and napped) in a wagon through the crowds.

Vienna’s other Christmas markets in 2026

We only had two nights in Vienna, so Rathausplatz was the one market we did properly. If you have more time, these are the other big markets on Vienna’s official tourism site, with the 2026 dates it publishes:

  • Schönbrunn is the one to pick with kids. The tourism site lists a carousel, a Ferris wheel, a children’s train and a crafts workshop, plus ice skating and curling. It’s also the only market in this list that stays open into the new year.
  • Spittelberg is smaller, in the narrow Biedermeier lanes of the 7th district, and sells more handmade crafts.
  • Maria-Theresien-Platz has around 70 stalls and is a short walk from Rathausplatz, so it’s easy to add on the same evening.

Dates and hours are from wien.info, Vienna’s official tourism site (checked October 20, 2026).

More to see in Vienna at Christmas

The markets are just the start. These were our favorite sights around them:

  • St. Stephen’s Cathedral. Climb the tower for a view over the city and the cathedral’s famous tiled roof.
  • The Austrian National Library’s State Hall, one of the most beautiful rooms we’ve ever stood in.
  • The Graben and Kohlmarkt, strung with chandelier-style Christmas lights.
  • A horse-drawn carriage (fiaker) ride around the old town.

You can book a St. Stephen’s tower or city tour or a Vienna Christmas market walking tour ahead of time.

Getting to Vienna

We arrived by train from Salzburg and left by train for Prague. Both rides were easy, even with a group of ten. If your phone plan doesn’t include international data, an Airalo eSIM makes navigating the city easy.

Would we go back?

In a heartbeat. Of all the markets we visited, Vienna’s felt the most magical. If you can only pick one Christmas market city in Europe, pick Vienna.

Yes. Most stalls sell kinderpunsch, a non-alcoholic punch, and there's a Ferris wheel in the park beside the Rathausplatz market. Our niece and nephew rode, and napped, in a wagon through the crowds.
